The origin
Coffee has grown in the highlands of Timor-Leste for close to two centuries, planted under shade on steep slopes between 600 and 1,850 metres. Almost all of it is grown by smallholder households farming small plots alongside food crops.
The island is the origin of Híbrido de Timor, a naturally occurring Arabica–Robusta cross later used in coffee breeding worldwide for its leaf-rust resistance. It still grows here alongside Typica and Catimor.
Investment over the past decade has concentrated on processing: central wet mills, raised drying beds and lot separation. That work is turning a long-standing commodity origin into a specialty one.
